Dr Rowan graduated in medicine from Otago University in 1969. After three years working in general medicine and surgery at Auckland Hospitals, she undertook training in dermatology at Auckland Hospital with some time spent in Australia. She was registered as a specialist dermatologist in 1979 and has been in private and public practice since then. She is a member of the Paediatric Dermatology Society and the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease.
